The Washburn EC‑29 “Red Magma Crackle” (also known as Spitfire II or Challenger II) is a rare Japanese-made superstrat introduced in 1987 and discontinued by 1989, with fewer than 2,000 units produced. Designed by luthier Stephen Davies, it features the patented Extended Cutaway, allowing unobstructed access to the upper frets (29 total, with compensated fretwire above the 24th fret for enhanced playability). The weight-through neck offers exceptional stability and feel, with depth at the nut measuring about 0.78″ and 0.88″ at the 12th fret.
Under the hood, the EC‑29 is built with neck-through maple construction, an ebony fretboard, and original active electronics that include both a standard mid-boost circuit and coil-tap push/pull functionality for tonal versatility. The hardware features a Washburn-licensed 600S Floyd Rose tremolo system and locking tuners, making it ideal for aggressive playing and down-tuned experimentation.
Its most striking characteristic is the Red Magma Crackle finish—each guitar’s crackle pattern is unique, and no two look exactly the same, adding to its collectible mystique. With fewer than 2,000 made and uncommon colour schemes like red, rainbow, and white crackle, the EC‑29 remains a sought-after piece among players and collectors alike.
